Wel­come Dr. Bil­ly Puck­ett as Direc­tor of Missions!

Daniell Asso­ci­a­tion Com­bines BPC Church Rela­tions and DOM,

by call­ing Dr. Bil­ly Puckett.

In a called meet­ing of the Daniell Bap­tist Asso­ci­a­tion in Ailey, Geor­gia Jan­u­ary 9, 2017 the exec­u­tive com­mit­tee unan­i­mous­ly approved the call­ing of Brew­ton Park­er Col­lege pro­fes­sor Dr. Bil­ly Puck­ett, as the Direc­tor of Mis­sions.  Dr. Puck­ett replaces Rev. Rob­by Smith who served the asso­ci­a­tion for over nine years before leav­ing to take a sim­i­lar posi­tion in North Car­oli­na. Accord­ing to Rev. Don Moye, Exec­u­tive Pas­tor of Vidalia First Bap­tist Church and Mod­er­a­tor of the Daniell Bap­tist Asso­ci­a­tion, we ini­tial­ly appoint­ed a search com­mit­tee as well as an inter­im search com­mit­tee to locate the appro­pri­ate can­di­dates for both posi­tions. The plan was to have an inter­im dur­ing the time that the search com­mit­tee select­ed a long term candidate.

It was the inter­im com­mit­tee that first approached Dr. Puck­ett and upon inter­view­ing him, let Rev. Moye know that he looked promis­ing as a can­di­date for the long term posi­tion. The com­mit­tees had pre­vi­ous­ly agreed that an inter­im can­di­date would not be an option for the long term posi­tion, so the rec­om­men­da­tion of the inter­im com­mit­tee was that Dr. Puck­ett be hand­ed off to the search com­mit­tee. This start­ed a con­ver­sa­tion that includ­ed Dr. Puck­ett, Dr. Steve Echols, Pres­i­dent of Brew­ton Park­er Col­lege, and for­mer Direc­tor of Mis­sions, Rev. Rob­by Smith. The vision of these men includ­ed com­bin­ing the posi­tion that Dr. Puck­ett pre­vi­ous­ly held as Direc­tor of Church and Pas­tor Rela­tions with the posi­tion of Direc­tor of Mis­sions for the Association.

With the sup­port of both com­mit­tees, Dr. Puck­et­t’s name was pre­sent­ed to the asso­ci­a­tion’s Admin­is­tra­tive Team who met with and unan­i­mous­ly vot­ed in favor of call­ing the pro­fes­sor. It was then pre­sent­ed and approved, also unan­i­mous­ly, at the exec­u­tive meeting.

Dr. Puck­ett will serve with part-time duties at Brew­ton Park­er Col­lege and the Daniell Bap­tist Asso­ci­a­tion. A task that he says “will allow me to use cer­tain skill sets that God has giv­en me, but also allow me the priv­i­lege of teach­ing and bestow­ing knowl­edge to stu­dents”. The skill set that Dr. Puck­ett referred to involves his expe­ri­ence as an Asso­ciate Direc­tor of Mis­sions dur­ing Hur­ri­cane Kat­ri­na, in New Orleans, where he was liv­ing as he worked on his Ph.D in The­ol­o­gy and Ethics.

Hav­ing spent near­ly ten years work­ing with orga­ni­za­tions sent to rebuild after the dev­as­ta­tion such as, The Samar­i­tan’ Purse, Habi­tat for Human­i­ty and the New Orleans Bap­tist Asso­ci­a­tion in con­junc­tion with the Louisiana Bap­tist Con­ven­tion and South­ern Bap­tist Con­ven­tion instilled in him the skill set he need­ed.  Dr. Puck­ett explained that, God allowed me to lead mis­sion­ar­ies, rebuild homes and pour out His Grace in min­istry in and around New Orleans. This expe­ri­ence also includ­ed work­ing with local church­es and con­nect­ing them with mis­sion teams and devel­op their dis­as­ter relief response.

After Dr. Puck­ett was affirmed in his call­ing to the Daniell Bap­tist Asso­ci­a­tion, he stood before the church rep­re­sen­ta­tives and became emo­tion­al dur­ing his address. When that hap­pened, I remem­bered that I am not wor­thy to be used by God for such things. He is very gra­cious to use us and the grand idea of serv­ing the Bride of Christ is very over­whelm­ing and hum­bling Puck­ett explained.

Dr. Bil­ly Puck­ett lives in Ailey with his wife, Katy and their sons, John-William and Jack.
