Welcome Dr. Billy Puckett as Director of Missions!
Daniell Association Combines BPC Church Relations and DOM,
by calling Dr. Billy Puckett.
In a called meeting of the Daniell Baptist Association in Ailey, Georgia January 9, 2017 the executive committee unanimously approved the calling of Brewton Parker College professor Dr. Billy Puckett, as the Director of Missions. Dr. Puckett replaces Rev. Robby Smith who served the association for over nine years before leaving to take a similar position in North Carolina. According to Rev. Don Moye, Executive Pastor of Vidalia First Baptist Church and Moderator of the Daniell Baptist Association, we initially appointed a search committee as well as an interim search committee to locate the appropriate candidates for both positions. The plan was to have an interim during the time that the search committee selected a long term candidate.
It was the interim committee that first approached Dr. Puckett and upon interviewing him, let Rev. Moye know that he looked promising as a candidate for the long term position. The committees had previously agreed that an interim candidate would not be an option for the long term position, so the recommendation of the interim committee was that Dr. Puckett be handed off to the search committee. This started a conversation that included Dr. Puckett, Dr. Steve Echols, President of Brewton Parker College, and former Director of Missions, Rev. Robby Smith. The vision of these men included combining the position that Dr. Puckett previously held as Director of Church and Pastor Relations with the position of Director of Missions for the Association.
With the support of both committees, Dr. Puckett’s name was presented to the association’s Administrative Team who met with and unanimously voted in favor of calling the professor. It was then presented and approved, also unanimously, at the executive meeting.
Dr. Puckett will serve with part-time duties at Brewton Parker College and the Daniell Baptist Association. A task that he says “will allow me to use certain skill sets that God has given me, but also allow me the privilege of teaching and bestowing knowledge to students”. The skill set that Dr. Puckett referred to involves his experience as an Associate Director of Missions during Hurricane Katrina, in New Orleans, where he was living as he worked on his Ph.D in Theology and Ethics.
Having spent nearly ten years working with organizations sent to rebuild after the devastation such as, The Samaritan’ Purse, Habitat for Humanity and the New Orleans Baptist Association in conjunction with the Louisiana Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Convention instilled in him the skill set he needed. Dr. Puckett explained that, God allowed me to lead missionaries, rebuild homes and pour out His Grace in ministry in and around New Orleans. This experience also included working with local churches and connecting them with mission teams and develop their disaster relief response.
After Dr. Puckett was affirmed in his calling to the Daniell Baptist Association, he stood before the church representatives and became emotional during his address. When that happened, I remembered that I am not worthy to be used by God for such things. He is very gracious to use us and the grand idea of serving the Bride of Christ is very overwhelming and humbling Puckett explained.
Dr. Billy Puckett lives in Ailey with his wife, Katy and their sons, John-William and Jack.
